Chinese zodiac signs sound interesting, but it will be a long process, as you will have to draw 12 characters. If we take something unusual, then what about playing cards? Jack, Queen, King, Joker. If it's not too hard, you can add a Six and an Ace as a pair adopts.

Some ideas that came to mind. - The four elements. - Ancient pantheons (Greek / Roman come to mind, but there's plenty of other cool ones too!) - Emotions as characters. - Holiday mascots maybe? (Easter bunny and so on, but these may sell better around their respective holidays)
